The Hermitage of Sant’Alberto is a place that has stopped in time, an oasis of peace in the heart of the Oltrepò Pavese where faith, art and history harmonize, suggesting unique emotions.
Located within the Staffora Valley, an untouched region where nature expresses itself in characteristic nuances among mountains, pastures and chestnut woods, the Hermitage of Sant’Alberto gave birth to its legend with a miraculous healing.
In fact, it is said that Alberto di Butrio, perhaps belonging to the Malaspina family, healed the mute son of the Marquis of Casalasco, who out of gratitude built a Romanesque church dedicated to the Madonna where hermit followers could celebrate the Divine Office.
Over the years the hermitage grew in power and number of followers until it became a thriving spiritual center still active today: the tower of the city walls and small Romanesque churches remain clearly visible, that of Santa Maria, part of the original nucleus, the oratory of Sant’Antonio and the mausoleum of Sant’Alberto.
Here you can admire fascinating cycles of frescoes depicting the client Bertramino Malaspina inserted in religious representations, dating back to 1484 and attributed to the school of the Boxilio brothers.
By visiting the hermitage you will enter a place of silence and prayer with enchanting suggestions, a context that preserves the charm of the history of the area surrounded by pleasant and uncontaminated nature.
One of the destinations to visit during your stay at the San Gaudenzio Hotel.
